Ozarks Guide

Grants and Funding for Ozarks Community, Arts and Event Projects

Small-town festivals, arts programs, museums, trails, public spaces and community projects are often funded from several modest sources rather than one giant grant.

This guide is a practical starting point for Ozarks nonprofits, schools, local governments, community groups, arts organizations and public institutions looking for project funding in Missouri and Arkansas.

The first section is time-sensitive and was checked October 2, 2026. The rest of the guide points to recurring programs and funders worth bookmarking.

Start local before starting federal

Start local before starting federal

For a small Ozarks organization, a $2,000 local grant that closely fits the project may be more useful than spending weeks chasing a six-figure federal program.

A practical search order is:

  1. local community foundation;
  2. city, county or regional program;
  3. state arts, humanities, tourism, heritage or conservation program;
  4. federal program when the project's scale and administrative capacity justify it.

Smaller local grants can also help build a funding stack for a larger project.

Before you apply

Before you apply

Check eligibility first

Look for:

  • geography;
  • nonprofit, government or school status;
  • fiscal-sponsorship rules;
  • match requirements;
  • project start dates;
  • prohibited expenses;
  • recent-recipient restrictions.

Match the project to the funder

An outdoor-education project may fit Everyone Outdoors but not an arts grant. A local-history exhibit may fit Missouri Humanities or HumanitiesAR better than a general community-development program.

Keep a reusable grant file

Prepare:

  • short organization description;
  • IRS determination letter or government/school documentation;
  • annual budget;
  • project budget;
  • board list;
  • project timeline;
  • proof of matching funds when required;
  • short project-leader biographies;
  • attendance or participation numbers;
  • a simple outcomes plan.

Talk to the program officer

Many of these funders encourage applicants to contact staff before submitting. A short conversation can answer the most important question early: does this project fit this program?
